The Eco-Schools Award Scheme
The programme is a learning resource and topic areas include Litter, Waste Minimisation, Transport, Healthy Living, Energy, Water, School Grounds and Global Citizenship.
A pupil committee decides which areas need attention, after a thorough survey has been done. Working alongside adults and with help from outside agencies, the Eco-Schools programme takes learning beyond the classroom and develops responsible citizenship attitudes both at home and in the community.
There are over 1500 Eco-schools in Wales – why not join them'
The Eco-Schools European Green Flag, awarded to schools with high achievement in their programme, is a recognised and respected Eco-label for performance in Education for Sustainable Development.
The scheme is endorsed by the curriculum authority for Wales (ACCAC), the Schools’ Inpectorate ESTYN and is supported by the National Assembly for Wales.
The Eco-Schools programme is an on-going activity, with the award being re-assessed and renewed every two years.
There are presently over 8500 registered Eco-Schools in 25 European countries including 5800 in the UK and over 1500 in Wales. Eco-Schools are distributed throughout all 22 Welsh Local Authorities, and include a broad range of Infants, Primary, Secondary and Special Needs schools.
